EC
"an Entertaining Comic"

Before EC disappeared into the singular title of Mad Magazine, it was a powerful comic book company.  Tales from the Crypt and Vault of Horror were forerunners of the genre and their mark can be seen down through the history of the form.  They were early onto the H. P. Lovecraft mythos and the writers and artists had strong ties to the godfathers of "Weird Tales," as well as the great science fiction authors of the era.  [Oh, yeah, Harry Harrison was a frequent EC writer.]

MARVEL COMICS

The "super" power in comics.  Marvel was on the rise during the age of Superheroes and captured the market with the likes of Spiderman, the Fantastic Four, and Conan.  But on their way up (with a careful eye on the EC empire) they managed to create some great horror comics.

LAST GASP ECO-FUNNIES

While EC, Marvel, and Warren were all publishing empires, Last Gasp seems to be the property of the artists.  Arnold, Smith, Deitch, Dallis, Todd, Sheriden, and Jaxon seems to have the say in these wonderfully ghastly comics which owe a great deal to the power of EC's horror artists.
