This series of 22 tales, under the title Can Such Thing Be?, had a great influence on writers who were to come.  Robert W. Chambers, H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard and the rest look to Bierce as the founder of the modern American horror story as Poe was the father of the gothic.
