I meet with the client to discuss their expectations and needs, discuss apparel.
Then we meet in my studio, with outfits, to do sketches and decide
on the pose.
Sittings are generally 3 hours long, with 5 minute breaks every 20
minutes. Oil
portraits generally take about 5 sittings, but may take longer depending
on the
sitter,
availability, etc.
Although I prefer normally not to work from photos, I will start a
portrait from a photo
when necessary, but only from a photo that I have taken myself, and
in conjunction
with a painted head study to guarantee proper color. I still
find it best to
finish from life. Posthumous portraits, of course, can only be done
from photos.
Apparel worn for the portrait should be made available to the artist
to aid in work
while client is not available. This will speed up the process,
and lessen the number
of sittings needed with the model. I prefer that the client
not see the portrait until
I am satisfied with the likeness, though I will present compositional
studies for approval
before starting.
Travel, framing and shipping are the responsibility of the client.
