Besides his mother, Sonia Haft Greene would
be the most important woman in Lovecraft's life. A dedicated patron of
his work she believed that Lovecraft could become more expansive with this
work and gain fame as a writer. She married him in 1924 to get him to New
York where he might have the chance to become the writer she thought he
could be. Lovecraft hated New York and being away from the cozy comfort
of his family in Providence. Two years after their marriage, Sonia relocated
to the midwest and the couple divorced.
